Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation (Standardization Administration) approved the release of two national standards for multimodal transport, namely “Classification and Codes of Goods for Multimodal Transport” (GB/T 42820-2023) and “Identification of Transportation Units for Multimodal Transport” (GB/T 42933-2023). These standards lay the foundation for further enhancing comprehensive transportation efficiency and reducing social logistics costs.

The development of multimodal transport is an important measure in building a modern integrated transportation system and promoting transportation structure adjustment and efficiency improvement in the logistics industry. The released national standard, “Classification and Codes of Goods for Multimodal Transport”, provides unified principles and methods for classifying and coding multimodal transport goods, including 19 major categories and 116 subcategories. This standard is compatible with the existing industry standards in the road and water transport sectors, such as JT/T 19 “Classification and Codes of Transport Goods” and TB/T 2690 “Classification and Code for Railway Freightage”. It aims to promote the standardization and normalization of goods classification in transportation at the national level.

The national standard, “Identification of Transportation Units for Multimodal Transport”, establishes uniform requirements for the identification and labeling of multimodal transportation units, ensuring the uniqueness of transportation unit identification. It enables real-time monitoring of the status, owner, and registration information of transportation units. Additionally, it provides an “identity card number” for the production of containers, semi-trailers, and exchange of containers, offering information management tools for logistics companies and playing a significant role in promoting the development of national multimodal transport.

The implementation of these two national standards will provide guidance for the standardized development of multimodal transport and greatly contribute to accelerating the development of “Single Document System” and “Single Container System” in multimodal transport. It will also contribute to the establishment of a modern logistics service system that supports both domestic and international circulation.
