Greg Yang graduated as top second in his grade from Shanghai Maritime University for the major of shipping business in 1982 and was awarded the degree of M.A. in Economics. In 1983, he was admitted to Shanghai Maritime University majoring in maritime law. In 1986, after three years of studying law, he was awarded the degree of L.L.M. and was assigned to work in the Ministry of Communications. He was admitted to the bar in 1988. He was in charge of drafting and examining maritime law and other laws and regulations concerning water transport, and marine transport safety in the Ministry of Communications. He became the division chief of the Legal Department under the Ministry of Communications in 1990. From 1989 to 1992, Greg Yang was trusted with an important task, namely becoming a primary drafter of China Maritime Code at the Legislative Bureau under the State Council. He was invited to the law school of Tulane University of Louisiana in the United States as a visiting scholar in 1992. He was a visiting attorney in practice in several law firms in New York, Philadelphia and Seattle in 1993. After coming back to China, Greg Yang assisted in founding the Jiao Tong Law Office under the Ministry of Communications and was vice director of the law office. In 1997, as the initiatory partner, he founded Hai Tong & Partners with other lawyers and became the director ever since.
Benefiting from his solid education background and the legislation experience, Greg Yang knows the law of marine transportation very well and has substantial experience in handling disputes of bill of lading and charterparty. Several cases tried in the Supreme Court of China and handled by Greg Yang, such as "GOLDEN DOVE" (regarding the effect of the incorporated clauses in B/L), "Henry Hardson Bridge" (delivery of cargo without bill of lading/time limitation) and "WAN SHENG" (qualification of consignor as subject of action of carrier) as well as Xiamen Prime vs. Maersk Line (China) Shipping Co., Ltd (public carrier) had great effect on the trial of similar cases in later stage. In addition, he has plenty of experience in handling marine accidents, such as “CMA DJAKARTA”, "HANJIN PENNSYLVANIA" explosion of dangerous goods, “Xin Tai Hai” collision and "CMA DJAKAPTA", and "TASMAN SEA" oil spill.
Greg Yang is an arbitrator of China Maritime Arbitration Commission and executive director of the China Maritime Law Association. In recent years, Greg Yang has been invited by the Supreme People’s Court many times to discuss with the judges and provide legal opinion to the Supreme People’s Court when the latter try complicated cases. Greg yang is also the Chinese legal counsel for the International Group of P & I Clubs as well as the Chinese legal counsel for all global container liner conferences (rate discussion agreements).
